Basser joined Village Roadshow Limited (VRL) as Director, Commercial & Legal in 1999, and was appointed Group Executive in Charge of Production in 2001 and CEO of Village Roadshow Pictures Group in 2005. Basser was responsible for all film production activities of VRL as well as all business and legal affairs of Village Roadshow Limited, including responsibility for the establishment of the Golden Village and Warner Village cinema circuits in Asia and for International Theme Parks at VRL. Basser also served as Director of most of VRL’s subsidiaries.
He relocated to Los Angeles from Melbourne, Australia in 2006, as CEO of Village Roadshow Pictures Group and CEO of Village Roadshow Entertainment Group.
Prior to joining VRL, Basser was the managing partner and head of the media and entertainment group at Thomson Geer (previously Herbert, Geer & Rundle), where he extensively represented VRL. Basser helped guide the public listing of VRL in 1988 and all of the group’s major acquisitions, capital raisings, financing, corporate and joint venture transactions since 1986. He was also instrumental in the establishment of VRPG and its production finance facility, which today sits at US$775 million.
VRP has released 98 Hollywood films (86 in partnership with Warner Bros.) since 1998 with Global Box Office receipts to date in excess of US$16 billion. 13 of those films have been produced in Australia including the Matrix Trilogy, Happy Feet, Happy Feet 2, Legends of the Guardians, The Great Gatsby, Mad Max: Fury Road and San Andreas.
VREG Asia produces films in Chinese as co-productions with Chinese companies for release in China.
Basser has extensive international business, commercial and legal experience spanning the United States, China, United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, South East Asia and elsewhere throughout the Asia-Pacific.
In 2016, Greg was awarded the Qantas Orry-Kelly International Award by Australians in Film for his success in and contribution to the international film industry.
Basser holds a Bachelor of Arts (Actuarial Studies) from Macquarie University and Bachelor of Law from Monash University.
