Village Roadshow Pictures Asia
With a particular focus on the Chinese film industry, Village Roadshow Pictures Asia (“VRPA”) was established in 2011 to undertake the development, financing, production, marketing and distribution of films for Greater China.
VRPA works closely with creative talent and producers, co-financiers and distributors throughout the Greater China region to identify, develop and co-produce films for release in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and, through VRPA affiliates, in Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. The majority of VRPA’s projects are structured as Sino-foreign co-productions and filmed in Greater China.
VRPA released its first two titles to a powerful China opening during the 2013 Chinese New Year holiday, making an impressive debut in the world’s fastest-growing film market:
The Stephen Chow-helmed Journey to the West shattered several
records, achieving the biggest opening day for a local production,
the biggest single-day gross for any film released in China, and the
highest weekly gross for any film released in China. Journey to the
West was also the fastest film in China to pass RMB 1 billion (US
$160.4 million) at the box office, taking just 16 days to exceed this
mark.
Say Yes!, a Chinese-language remake of the hit 1991 Fuji Television
drama 101st Marriage Proposal, set a new China record for a romance
film screening on Valentine’s Day, earning RMB 47 million (US $7.5
million), and grossed RMB 200 million (US$32.1 million) over the course
of its run.
VRPA is also co-producing with China Film Group and Wanda Media Group Keanu Reeves' directorial debut, Man of Tai Chi. Universal Pictures is a co-financier of the picture, which will be distributed by Universal and the co-producing partners.
Set in contemporary Beijing, Man of Tai Chi co-stars Reeves in an
action-packed drama that follows the spiritual journey of a young
martial artist, played by Tiger Chen, whose fighting skill brings him
to a realm of vast opportunities and painful choices.
